My name is Benjamin D. Gordon and I am a 2020 graduate of Palo Alto High School and a member of the class of 2025 at the University of Michigan. During my year off from school (2020-2021), I built and launched a network of independent tutors in the Bay Area, California to provide support services to students struggling through the challenges of online learning during Covid-19. In the summer of 2021, I relocated to Sag Harbor where I continued my in person academic enhancement work with numerous families. I am actively working on the Prizes, Challenges, and Crowdsourcing team at NASA as an intern.

My expertise lies in teaching quantitative reasoning at both the primary and secondary education levels. I have years of experience tutoring math to both primary and secondary education students. This includes students in the American education system as well as a number of international students. Over the years, I tutored in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and statistics. With younger children, I have worked on addition/subtraction, multiplication/division, fractions, and word problems, along with critical thinking skills. Additionally, I have worked with older students on psychology, economics, environmental science, and leadership/personal growth. In addition to tutoring, I offer educational support for children grades k-8. At the elementary levels, I have worked with children to bolster creativity, speech, and reading skills. My experience tutoring a wide range of subjects at different levels has helped me establish practices that best fit each child's learning style.

In addition to academic tutoring, I offer academic counseling that includes course selection, study tips, and outside of school academic projects. In the past, I have worked as a job coach for students who are looking to find paid work outside of school. This process includes building a resume or website, learning how to fill out applications, and participating in practice job interviews. Each year, I work with a small number of college seniors to prepare their college application essays for the application process.

During my first year at the University of Michigan, I earned university-wide academic honors (3.94 GPA) in courses that included mathematics, data science, philosophy, and college writing.

At Michigan, I am an active member of the Sigma Nu fraternity where I serve as the Risk Reduction Chairman. Here, I am tasked with identifying and planning to effectively handle potential risk management issues that arise within the chapter operations. Additionally, I lead open communication regarding chapter safety with the Inter Fraternity Council and our chapter’s national headquarters. I was voted in as the president of the Eta class of our chapter where I facilitated conversations between the candidate members and the active brothers during the candidate process. I am a member of the scholarship, honor board, social, standards, and apparel committees.

While in high school, I worked in student government where I served as the student representative on the Palo Alto Unified School District's Board of Education. It is here where I strengthened my communication skills while learning the ins and outs of a public education system that serves over 10,000 students. My time working with the board included planning, organizing, and executing online instruction for the students in the district. This was an intense, high pressure learning experience and I am confident that I can bring this knowledge to support your student one on one or in a small group.

Additionally, I spent 12 months as a childcare specialist for a family of 6 with two sets of twins ages 5 and 10. I have worked with students with special needs since seventh grade and have had great success working to further the educational development for students working through alternative learning processes.

I am extremely confident that your child, with my support, will continue both their academic and social growth outside of the traditional academic year.

I am very excited to get a chance to work with your family.
